Literature Text

Name: Kirmizi Javan. Kirmizi comes from the Indonesian word for crimson and Javan comes from the Javan rhino, Kirmizi’s species of Faunus.

Origin and Influence: For the most part, Kirmizi’s name and outfit resemble that from an Indonesia from an older era, while his behavior and to some degree his clothing come from the Indonesian Kris swordsmen. A Kris is an asymmetrical Indonesian sword, often inherited, that is believed to hold mystic powers or pertain good or bad luck. Kirmizi means crimson in Indonesian.

Species: Javan Rhino, a species of Rhino often found in Indonesia. Because of his stocky build and armor-like hide he is able to take a great deal of punishment, while at the same time the horn located atop his nose is used as a weapon only in worst-case scenarios. However, due to his relative size and his hide, he is prone to overheating in combat and has a particular weakness to burns of any kind, and as such must work to pace himself when fighting.

Age: 20.

Appearance: Kirmizi’s skin is a tan olive, while he is of stocky stance and is built like a tank. He wears a crimson colored multi-faceted ‘combat skirt’ that stretches to his knees, and wears no shirt when he can help it. His nose protrudes quite a bit, and a single, large horn shoots up right above his nose. Ashe handles heat poorly, most of the time he wears a light red tunic to when required. Kirmizi does prefer to go shirtless, mainly as too many clothes can cause him to overheat, but that fact isn’t often appreciated, especially in a society that looks for every opportunity possible to haul a Faunus off to jail, even for the most minor charges. He wears well-worn sandals, as well as a pair of brass bands on his wrists. His jet black hair is often tied in a knot, as he often forgets to even keep his hair brushed. For the most part, he does his best to maintain his appearance whenever he remembers, though it isn’t easy for one who travels so much.

Personality: Curiosity is a fickle thing. While most people would tell you that curiosity killed the cat, very few would believe that it would simply motivate the Rhino. As such, when most people meet the hulking frame that is Kirmizi Javan, they are rather surprised to find that he is not another dumb brute, but is in fact an incredibly curious (if a bit dim witted) individual, who relishes any opportunity to learn something new. He is well aware that he is not the brightest bulb, and to compensate he works as hard as he can to learn as much as possible, as in his own words “If I learn a lot I’ll have more in my head when I forget it than if I didn’t learn anything at all.” Even then, he is not content to simply read, and has traveled a considerable distance to observe the facets of the world in motion.

Because of his penchant to learning and tendency to have poor long-term recollection, Kirmizi’s memories consist of a random assortment of facts and trivia, usually with little use aside from idle talk, though once in a blue moon Kirmizi brings up any useful information, though he often mentions it long after the info is needed, and brings in the ire of his classmates as a response. Though he has a rather impressive arsenal of fun facts, most everyone around him grows frustrated quickly, as he will often bring up irrelevant information in the middle of a conversation. Much to his disappointment, few people want to know how many known dust subtypes there are when cramming for a history test. However, in combat his random assortment of trivia proves to be useful on occasion, as he may remember a Grimm’s weak point at a crucial moment, but on other days he’ll only remember after he’s been disarmed.

However, despite his curiosity, he often cares little for politics or relevant news, as he believes that the changing present is too confusing for him to even bother to keep up with, making him blissfully unaware of any and all gossip, not to mention the fact that he is unable to name the current King of Vale. Though he relishes the opportunity to learn anything new, the only area he truly steers clear of is current affairs, and as such was also quite surprised to find that the White Fang had turned violent. His forgetfulness also has caused him to struggle as a student, as where some students may be several pages behind in material they understand, Kirmizi is struggling to comprehend full chapters where others may have found understanding.

Relationships: As a general rule, both classmates and teachers know that patience is needed when dealing with Kirmizi as his forgetful and divergent tendencies often cause classmates to get frustrated, though most see him as a loveable looser, a gentle giant, and as such most put up with his slower demeanor. That being said, Kirmizi is an easy target for those who wish to ‘embellish’ their tales of glory, and as such has yet to catch on to the tall tales told by individuals such as Ivory Swindon.

Aura and Semblance: Despite his strength and prowess, Kirmizi’s semblance has yet to be unlocked, and as such he has no clue what it is. Even with this sever limitation, he still remains quite a capable Hunter.

Weapon: Unusual for most hunters in a highly advanced age, Kirmizi’s weapon of choice is not a multi-formed utensil of destruction, or even a metallurgicaly sound axe, but in fact is a family heirloom. His weapons of choice, Ajar and Inti, are asymmetrical Kris swords that have been passed down through Kirmizi’s family for countless generations, and despite that, they still retain form and power. The Javan family has been building mystic swords with a mixture of metal and dust for generations, and as such, both swords are a reflection of the finest work by that family. Unlike nearly any other weapon in existence, Ajar and Inti’s unique composition causes them to be infused with a mystical power that no science has yet to replicate. True to their names, Ajar and Inti are able to bind the elements of nature to itself for a brief time, allowing the swords to be surrounded in a thin field of rapid torrents when submerged in water, or being soaked in a flame will cause every crevice of the sword to glow, almost molten, searing anything with a touch. Truly, even the Javan family doesn’t know the true extent of their powers, and as such Jeruk uses the sword’s abilities sparingly, in fear of causing a great accident.

When fusing with the elements, Javan family swords are known to follow certain patterns. For example, when trust into the ground or coming in contact with earth of some sort, several fist-sized boulders surrounded the sword’s hilt, serving as a sort of guard. However, on command, these boulders can be launched at an opponent as a blunt projectile, capable of causing serious damage. However, once submerged in water, the water surrounds the blade in a torrent so swift and powerful it is able to cut clean through metal, and can be launched in short ranged attacks. Being placed in fire causes the sword to light objects aflame when it comes into contact with it, though acquiring fire can be awfully difficult in the middle of the wild. Due to the malleable nature of the swords, it is possible that there remain many other combinations of powers exist, though experimentation could prove rather hazardous. Even then, some of these effects even have sub categories, as a sword will react differently to sand than it would if it were stone or earth.

Fighting Style: Much like his general demeanor in the classroom, Kirmizi’s style is slow and observant, as he will frequently spar and harass an enemy to understand their general demeanor and habits when fighting. However, this can be time consuming, as he will utilize this strategy on every enemy he meets, even if it is the fortieth Beowulf he has fought. While this is awfully time consuming when fighting Grimm, it does prove to be a rather sound strategy when fighting humans and Faunus, and even has its uses when combating larger species of Grimm. He constantly prods with no intention of causing harm, Kirmizi works to learn an opponents’ strategy well before he can strike, but when the attack comes, Kirmizi strikes with full knowledge of his opponents’ habits and uses this foresight to quickly and efficiently destroy his enemies.

Backstory: Kirmizi Javan is the most recent son in the Javan family, a renowned group of sword makers in certain circles, who’s dust infused swords are of an incredible quality. However, the methods of making such high-quality swords are kept a family secret. Because of this, the Javan family trade is alive in an era of commercialization, as no company has managed to imitate the Javan family technique. Even then, Javan members are reluctant to share secrets even to their children, and as such over the years each Javan must go through an initiation and travel Remnant, retrieving dust from throughout the world. As the time has come for his trial, Javan has left his family home in the outskirts of Mystral and has made his way to Ambrose, a clueless Faunus in a town where discrimination runs wild. That being said, a member of the renowned Javan is likely to attract attention, regardless of the discrimination against Faunus. Even then, growing up under a revered family has made him somewhat oblivious to the extent of the oppression of the Faunus, though he certainly is aware of it.

Kirmizi’s first stop on his global trek happens to be the sleepy town of Ambrose, an unfortunate destination for someone who cannot hide his Faunus lineage in any way. Though he has received some odd glances in his travels, a Faunus carrying a large bag of dust in a predominantly discriminate society is likely to raise quite a few questions, from both a human-exclusive Magnum Opus and a certain Professor Maddox…
